ماذا قال توماس جيفرسون عن المكتبة العامة؟

في خطاب كتبه الرئيس الأمريكي الأسبق توماس جيفرسون إلى جون وايش عام 1809م جاء فيه:

"كنت دائما أفكر أنه لا يوجد شيء يمكن أن يفعل الكثير من الخير بتكلفة بسيطة أفضل من تأسيس مكتبة إعارة صغيرة في كل حي أو منطقة، تحتوي كتبا منتقاه بعناية، وتعيرها للناس، على أن تخضع هذه الخدمة لقواعد تضمن ردهم الآمن لهذه الكتب في الموعد المستحق."
